H-plane T-junction

Model

Waveguide H-plane T-junctions play an important role as a power dividing structure in designing diplexers. The standard H-plane T-junction is commonly used but has poor characteristics. Additional matching elements incorporated into the channel paths are required to improve the performance of overall diplexer structure. There are a number of different T-junctions configuration with matching elements. In this example, we will investigate the standard H-plane T-junction with and without nose as a matching element.

Simulation

A template broadband simulation is prepared and then the S-parameter Simulation Setup tool is used to build the necessary simulations to extract the S-parameters. The UPML absorbing and PEC boundary conditions are used to truncate the domain.

Results

Simulated S-parameters of the H-plane T-junctions which demonstrates the poor characteristics of the standard H-plane T-junction. Additional matching elements such as a nose or inductive posts can be used to improve the performance of the junction. The E-field distribution at 33 GHz is shown in bottom figure.
